SUCCESSFUL ARISS CONTACT WITH DE GASPERI SCHOOL IN BARI, ITALY

Tuesday, 6 April 2010 at 10:47 UTC, i.e. 12:47 local time, Alcide De Gasperi School at �Cittadella Mediterranea della Scienza�, promoted by University of Bari, Italy established a direct radio contact with NASA astronaut Timothy J. Creamer KC5WKI on board the International Space Station.

Mr. Michele Mallardi, IZ7EVR operated the radio contact. The questions were read by pupils and one teacher of De Gasperi School in Noicattaro, near Bari, South Italy. The contact site is located at �Cittadella Mediterranea della Scienza�, promoted by University of Bari. The �Cittadella Mediterranea della Scienza� is a permanent structure whose main aim is to diffuse scientific culture and related technologies. An audience of more than 100 students, teachers, visitors and media assiste to the contact. Before the contact, ARISS mentor Francesco De Paolis, IK0WGF introduced the event and ARISS activities with a presentation.

At 10:47 UTC, contact with NA1SS was established by station IZ7EVR. Astronaut Timothy J. Creamer KC5WKI answered 22 questions. The signals from the ISS were loud and clear all the time.

Local media and newspapers covered the event. The audio and video of the event was distributed by webcast on http://it.justin.tv/cittadella and http://www.cittadellamediterraneadellascienza.it/ - about 500 contacts by webstreaming through Europe and America.

ARISS CONTACT PLANNED WITH SCHOOL IN POLAND

An ARISS school contact is planned with participants at Abramowski School in Katowice.

Edward Abramowski Technical and Comprehensive Schools Complex no. 3 in Katowice was established in 1945 as a secondary school with one faculty – photography and technology. Later it was incorporated into the Silesian Technology Centre in Katowice. It was only in 1950 that the school became a separate teaching unit with graduates from the faculty of photography. Courtesy of intensive efforts of its headmaster and teachers, in the year 1956 the school received its own bulding in the district Katowice-Piotrowice which remains in its posession until today.

Presently, the school offers the students two faculties: Photography and IT Electronics. The Schools Complex is formed not only by the Technical High School, but also a Comprehensive School with teaching programmes covering mathematics and IT as well as journalism and photography. On the other hand, the Technical High School has classes specializing in electronics and photography profiles.

Abramowski School is a modern institution with a well-qualified staff, boasting excellent educational base and equipment. They regularly modernize the facilities. Students take new challenges very willingly. They take part in many knowledge-based competitions and contests, where they often win high positions. Abramowski School also has a tradition in the field of radio contact. The School Amateur Radio Club SP9ZHQ was established in 1999 and since then has been active on many bands.

Presently the school has 440 students and 50 teachers.

The direct ARISS contact is scheduled Monday 12 April at 06:53 UTC, which is 08:53 CEST.

The ground station will operate with call sign SN0ISS.

Downlink signals will be audible in Europe on 145.800MHz FM.

Participants will ask as many of following questions as time allows:

14. Tomasz: Does weightless condition have any side effects on your system?
15. Kamil: How long did it take to get used to living in weightless condition?

Ja również odebrałem łączność z ARISS-em, ale warunki nie pozwoliły za bardzo na usłyszenie całości korespondencji (gdzieś koło pierwszych trzech minut tylko, przy oknie wewnątrz budynku, bo chwilowo nie mogłem wyjść na zewnątrz). Nasłuch na Motoroli AP10, lokalizacja JO71TC.

PS. Piotrek, musiałeś wzbudzać niezłe zainteresowanie stojąc ze swoim sprzętem w centrum miasta

Marcinie, twoja wypowiedz nasuwa pomysł... jak zainteresować ludzi krótkofalarstwem Po prostu należy do nich wyjść . Piotruś super! Ja tez miałem SWL ARISS dla JO92he. Jak to ktoś napisał na forum... taki przelot (prawie nad głowami) powinien być słyszalny na gumowej antence ręczniaka

Ja dziś w swoim SWL patrzyłem jak zmienia się odbiór słabego sygnału z ISS przy włączonej i wyłączonej korekcji dopplera, oraz popróbowałem wykonać korekcję ręcznie. SWL prowadziłem na TS-2000 i słabej antenie rezerwowej - mobilowa dookolna zamontowana w polaryzacji poziomej - bo nie zabrałem w teren przewodu N-UC1 tylko N-N do anteny głównej. Ciekawe doświadczenia i szybka improwizacja, a gapiów za dużo nie miałem.

Chcieliśmy złożyć kondolencje waszym rodakom. Łączymy się w smutku z całą Polską, ze wszystkimi Polakami i ich przyjaciółmi. Będziemy oglądać was ze stacji kosmicznej – powiedział w imieniu całej załogi ISS Soichi Noguchi.

Zgadza się, nasłuch prowadziłem na standardowej gumowej antence. Co prawda tylko krótki fragment (pierwsze 3-4 minuty łączności), ale i tak uważam to za niezły rezultat, jeżeli chodzi o niekorzystne warunki odbioru. Jakość sygnału oceniam na 46 (w najlepszych momentach).

W mobilu w drodze do pracy słuchałem także słuchałem. Początkowo sygnał był na poziomie S1-S2 ale później było już perfekcyjnie S9+. Antena to typowa duobandowa antena mobilowa na podstawie magnesowej.

ASTRONAUT SOICHI NOGUCHI TALKS TO ABRAMOWSKI SCHOOL IN KATOWICE, POLAND

Monday 12 April 2010, the Abramowski School SN0ISS in Katowice, Poland, established a radio contact with astronaut Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP, on board the International Space Station.

Edward Abramowski Technical and Comprehensive Schools Complex no. 3 in Katowice consists of a Technical High School offering two faculties, Photography and IT Electronics, and a Comprehensive School with teaching programmes covering mathematics, IT, journalism and photography. In 1999 the Abramowski School established an Amateur Radio Club, SP9ZHQ. At present, more than 440 students attend the school.

The radio contact coordinator Jerzy Zajda SP9BGS and his technical team set up a satellite station with automatic antenna tracking as well as a backup vertical antenna.

Contact between SN0ISS and OR4ISS was established at 6:53 UTC, right on schedule. The questions were read by the students. Astronaut Soichi Noguchi answered 11 questions. He explained for example that during the night phase the outside temperature is around minus 200 degree Celsius. At the end the astronaut did send from Space the expression of his condolence to the Polish people.

The audience was about 350 listeners: students, parents, teachers, mass-media representatives, interested parties and VIP's such as the Governor of the Silesian Province.

All the attendees were very excited and they felt a great relief when they get connected with the ISS. It was an unforgettable moment for everybody. Unfortunately, this contact took place at a very exceptional moment for the Polish people, they lost their President as well as many other authorities in a plane crash exactly 48 hours before the event. The audience was very touched when Soichi sent them his condolences.

The signal from the ISS was almost always clear and loud.

4 TV channels, 3 radio stations, 4 newspapers and a European photo agency covered the event.

The European Parliament Brussels hosts cultural exhibitions, sponsored by Members of the European Parliament. These cultural events are not open to the general public, but reserved to the members of the Parliament and of the European Commission and their personnel.

April 26-30, 2010 an exhibition is set up by the International Amateur Radio Union in collaboration with the European Space Agency and sponsored by MEP Birgit Sippel, Germany. The Exhibition's name is "European Amateur Radio Benefiting Society" and the thematics are Emergency, Education and Space.

Tuesday 27 April, students of the European School, Brussels will visit the Exhibition. An ARISS contact is planned at 12.50 UTC, which is 14.50 CEST.

The European School Brussels II is situated near the heart of Brussels and serves the families of civil servants working with the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Institutions and also NATO. There are more than 3000 boys and girls aged 3-18, from 11 of the European Union countries in this school, which is divided into a Primary and a Secondary section. Lessons are delivered through 8 different language sections, each student receiving instruction in their mother tongue and, as they progress through the school, partly in a second language.

This chance to participate in an ARISS project has been actively embraced by the Science faculty and it is here where the opportunities for curricular integration are gaining momentum. In the 1st Year Secondary (typically aged 11) students study forces, gravity, weight and basic ideas about fields. In the 2nd Year, studies of the Solar System, and well beyond, link directly to the Shuttle missions and the International Space Station. In Year 7 (the final Baccalaureate year, when most students are aged 18) the Physics section on Gravitational Fields is mainly about the mechanics of planetary and satellite motion. Topics (and questions) are often presented within the context of NASA and ESA missions.

Because of the high profile of the location of the event at the European Parliament Building in Brussels, there is considerable scope to raise awareness through media coverage, especially as this is the model schooling for Europe.

The radio contact will be a telebridge, operated by ARISS ground station LU1CGB, located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The contact will be distributed over EchoLink and IRLP newtworks.

Participants will ask as many of following questions as time allows:

1. Stefanie: Do you sweat in the Space? What happens with the dirty laundry?

2.Mathilda: Do you do special exercises or eat specific food in order to maintain your physical condition during your travel in space?

3.Marie: Being so far away from Earth, how do you keep in contact with friends and family and do you keep track of current issues and if you do, do they affect you in any way?

4. Clemens-Hugo: What s the effect of zero gravity on cell growth? If cell growth is slower, would people live longer and would fewer people get cancer?

5. Amelie Mia: What do you do in your spare time?

6. Julian: I have heard that from space you can recognize Belgium because its highways are lit at night? Is this true? What else do you recognize?

7. Matas: How do you protect the space station from space debris?

8. Thomas: Did your character change since you came to the ISS? How do you handle differences of opinion?

9. Muriel: If a member of the crew unexpectedly gets ill, is there anyone on board with a medical education? Can he be treated like on earth? (eg. injections)

10. Benedikt: Have your experiments had results that are relevant for us on earth? Which effects do they have on our daily life?

11. Catarina: How do you navigate in space? How can you reach the ISS precisely with a space shuttle?
