cytat z listopada ub.r:

This is a very well constructed and functioning radio. The first thing you notice about the radio when you get it out of the box is the weight. Though 3/4 the size of my FT-950 it is every bit as heavy.

There is a solid feel to the dials and buttons. The main tuning knob has a good weighted feel to it. The buttons and dials seem to be well laid out for functionality. The display clearly conveys the information needed and is not too cluttered.

The menu system, though it has quite a few items, is simple to find items in. Most menu items are set once and done items. And you can even store two total sets of menu settings to be selected at will. You can, for example, have one setup for CW and one for SSB. Also you can selectively define a subset of the menu items, so you can quickly access those items you like to fiddle with.

The transmitter is straightforward to setup and use for SSB and the audio quality seemed very good. I broke through a couple pileups with little or no effort running just 100 W. The radio also seems quite easy to set up for split operation and has a TX watch feature so you can find the magic spot to capture the DX.

The autotuner is absolutely phenominal. For my antenna, when it could find a match, it took at most a few brief seconds. And when it could not find a match (40 meter vertical tuning on 80 meters) it did not waste time figuring out that it could not tune it. Within seconds it knew and stopped.

During normal conditions, and even on crowded bands the receiver really sounds quiet and the roofing filters and DSP filtering features work well. During heavy SSB contest conditions, however, I found the audio less than pleasing, with some ringing evident in the passband. (I like heavy contesting and so this is why I gave the radio a 4 instead of a 5.) In my estimation the radio was on par with my FT-950 for heavy SSB contesting. In fact, for the money and features I would give the 950 the edge.

Of interest, however, was that this issue could be mitigated often by increasing the DSP bandwidth above 2.7 KHz, forcing the radio into upconversion mode where the objectional passband ringing-like noise would go away and I could copy signals again.

The good news about this issue is that I believe some improvements in the DSP filtering in a future firmware release could take care of the issue. That is to say, that I believe it to be is a poor interaction between the roofing filter and the DSP which a firmware upgrade could take care of. It is now up to Kenwood to hopefully pick up on this and make some improvements.

Many have been beating down the TS-590S for the fact that on 6, 10, 12, 17, 30 meters the radio can only do upconversion with the wider roofing filter at the first IF. But what is neglected is that at the second IF there are some narrower roofing filter to help somewhat (6KHz for AM, 2.7 KHz for SSB, but no 500 Hz for CW). I think the radio will perform just fine on SSB even on these bands as it is currently configured. This configuration, if it was done with proper gain distribution, is very simular to the Ten Tec OMNI VII's architechure.

On downconversion (15, 20, 40, 80, 160 meters) you get the 2.7KHz roofer at the first IF and a 500 Hz roofer for CW and narrowband modes as well. Also, as I mentioned, when you want a wide passband, you can have that as well with some simple and quick adjustment of the DSP. In fact, I think it would be nice to be able to go narrow and keep the radio in the upconversion mode during certain conditions on the bands.

One last note, although I only used the radio on CW to listen, the autotune feature for CW works really well. If you are a little tone deaf, no need to worry, the radio can automatically tune the CW signal into the proper pitch with the touch of a button.

As I said, I like to do serious SSB contesting, so I sold the radio, and kept my FT-950. But, in the future, with some tweaking of the DSP filtering, etc, I would not hesitate to buy the radio again.

With all this said, I would have no problem recommending this radio to anyone except the serious SSB contester. It is a beautiful radio, very well built and engineered.

Narazie TS-590 zmierza do "najlepszego stosunku ceny do jakosci/mozliwosci", i kazda opinie trzeba dzielic, watpie w brak mocy produkcyjnych, raczej cos poprawiaja, w obecnym raczej kryzysowym swiecie, sztuczka marketingowa polegajaca na ograniczeniu dostepu dziala tylko na promil konsumentow, inaczej sprawa by sie miala nascie lat temu, gdy nie bylo kryzysu, kazdy mial nadwyzke kasy gotowa wydac, lub przytrzymac do czasu pojawienia sie danego produktu, tak dziala rynek dobr luksusowych, bogaci zawsze maja kase i moga poczekac oczko.
