BMW Business C53 e39 wide - 65.12-6 Becker
Dear Martin, bc211
I havenot informations about this "new generation,s" car radio system, but I browsed your pictures, and the pin descriptions of the front panel. Started to use google, it become clear, this design has at minimum 2-3 bus systems.
Maybe you identified the K-Bus, used in BMW cars, maybe i-bus? this are versions of can-bus, if I know well, and there is another bus for multimedia system control, this is the MOST bus, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOST_Bus it seems, you can see the interface lines of it on the front panel,s connectors.

On the coderadio,s Becker page there are more than 120 different modells from Becker
http://codedradio.info/?i=bn&st=becker
This table use some items, to identifying the models, and a front panel picture too.
The items are:
Наименование: Модель: Защита: Номер: Производитель: Процессор: Память: Код: УМЗЧ:
Maybe you have success, to identify your model, I see only some of this modells have this controller chip: SAFC161C13LF
This is a controller optimized for autmotive applications, there is a 568 pages User Manual for this family of chips, and I think, I can identify this (or similar?) chip on your picture.
Another key component is the SiliconSytems OS8804 controller, it is incredible complicated controller itself:
-----
The OS8804 is a monolithic CMOS integrated circuit, which combines high-speed micro-controllers and
digital signal processors with high quality analog circuitry. It has four processors, ten ADCs and DACs, and
a variety of digital I/O. The programmable Host Controller and fixed point DSPs enable the OS8804 to be a
cost-effective solution for a wide variety of applications.
The MOST Processor provides a standard interface to the MOST Network.
----
I found only a short, "preliminary" datasheet about it.

My questions, appearead after some short google searches:
- it seems, you concenatrate to the front panel connetor:
maybe you have any usefull interface to listen/sniff the K-bus
- but there are some other connectors on-board:
in right side there are 2 red connctors, it seems, on this interfeces the radio unit conneted to the "system car bus" (maybe CAN bus) to the main car controller(s), seems to listen in the same time on this bus too.
- did you identified on the coderadio table your modell? What is the exact type of the used main controller?
- need to find some basic info about the control codes, used on such systems. Maybe here is a starting point:

============
If you think, or other participants here think, this is OFFTOPIC here, becasue this is not a "radio", we can continue in private mail, you can reach me on address hg5apz at google mail. I have some practice to invetigate/listen on CAN bus, because we spent time with my fried, to understand the commnunication inside a fish-radar system from Lowrance. The problems were similar...
